Additional Information…
For our day walkers, we convene at the Te Aratipi Homestead at 10:00 am, where we'll complete the registration, distribute maps, lunches, and instructions before you embark on your Te Aratipi journey!
Our delicious country-style picnic lunch includes a sandwich/bun/wrap, a piece of fruit, homemade farm baking, and more to keep you going. Please bring your own water bottle to fill up with our fresh Te Aratipi spring water.
A minimum of 4 catered day walkers is required to run the walk. The 2 day, 2 night (or 3) walk and accommodation option is currently limited to groups of 4 for the 2024/25 season. We might extend this to groups of 10 for the 2025/26 season. Reach out to us if interested!
For our guests staying with us and participating in the walk, we offer the option of a 3rd night with you arriving the night before, from 4pm onwards (after a long winery lunch perhaps!) and conducting the registration that evening. Otherwise, we convene at the Te Aratipi Homestead at 10:00 am, where we'll complete the registration, distribute maps, guidebooks, lunches, and instructions before you embark on your Te Aratipi journey! We offer full catering with country-style fare. We endeavor to use fresh, local or on-farm ingredients whenever possible, guaranteeing that our meals are both delicious and nourishing. You'll be treated to homemade meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert, along with home-baked treats. Tea and coffee are also provided but feel free to bring your preferred herbal teas or alcoholic beverages of your choice. We can cater for special dietary requirements by prearrangement, please email us.
You'll navigate comfortably at your own pace along clearly marked farm tracks, laneways, or fence-lines, guided by a map and detailed instructions—with markers every 250 meters to ensure you stay ‘on track’.
The walk traverses a diverse array of terrains and walking conditions. Be prepared for some irregular surfaces, as the path includes bulldozed farm tracks, expansive open grasslands, creek crossings, and narrow livestock trails. Hill ascents are part of the journey on both days. A fair degree of physical fitness, along with robust, comfortable footwear, is necessary. We recommend sturdy hiking boots with reliable ankle support and a daypack — please consult our 'What To Bring' section below for suggested daypack items. Over the course of two days, the walk is considered moderate to vigorous, so it's advisable to break in your boots beforehand and get some experience with hill walking.
While cell phone reception on the farm can be spotty, there are areas along the walking trail where you can get a signal. You will receive a personal locator beacon (PLB) for emergencies and if unable to get to a highpoint with cellular reception.
Those not participating in the walk can still join in on the fun by taking a Can-Am for transportation. Please reach out to us via email to discuss your needs
Remember, this is a working sheep and cattle farm first and foremost. Gates will need to be left as found. Stock, Shepards, working dogs, and farm vehicles will possibly be seen.
